Period Campag Record parts for 1976 Colnago Super.

My first project. For riding,not showing, so I'm not after NOS (unless priced right) good condition will do. I've a fixed budget of under £200.
I'm looking for 1970's Record clincher wheels (hubs or rims). Front (band-on) and rear mechs. Down tutube shifters (braze-on). Chainset or cranks 170mm. Pedals, levers and calipers.

I think you will struggle with finding clincher wheels from the 70's,

The thinnest clinchers from those days were I think Elans but my memeory might need a refreshing from google

Tubs only if you are going period build IMHO

You are going to struggle to find all the parts separately for £200. Best bet might be to look for a donor bike with equipment from the right period. Even if the frame is a bit of a tip, the components are usually structurally sound.

Record brakes in particular go for excessive prices (in my opinion).
Gran Sport is less well finished, but mostly functionally equivalent to N. & S. Record. It is less sought after and goes for more sensible prices.

Clinchers: Mavic Module E (http://www.mavic.com/en/history/1973/1979/The-Module-E). I've been running one for years, and it has been a very reliable rim. Looks pretty similar to a 70s sprint rim. £20 @ VBC (http://vintagebikecave.com/products/rim ... -700c-rim/)

The first rim with double 'hook' bridge to seat a high-pressure tire developed by Michelin: the Elan.

As above....the Elan was just about available from 1975. in 1976 Tubs were ubiquetious and with wheelbases being 37.5 inches or less they still would be a very tight fit ..

Currently £214. I think the brakes are allen key fitting, which would be problem with your frame, I expect. Seatpost is 27.2, which should be right for the Super.

That's quite a good price for that lot. The only major difference between gran sport and record was the cranks were polished (not anodised), the brakes had non-rubber adjusters, the rear mech had a pressed metal jockey wheel cage, pedals were polished......... and a few other bits.

Not sure about the brake bolts, the original 1978 were normal but the later were allen key. If that's the case the bolts may be a tad short

1976 Colnago Super

Thank you all for the helpful ideas and information. It's a steep learning curve!
Would the Module rims take a 23C tyre?
If I decide to go with sprints could anyone tell me what the rims for the period would be?
Finally does anyone have a link as to what would be a normal/usual build for a 1976 Super?

Yes, Module E will take a 23C.

Sprint rims: Fiamme red label, Super Champion Competition. Getting harder to find in good condition, unsurprisingly. If you decide to go for something that looks appropriate, then it will have to be silver rather than dark anodised, and not deep section.

For an example build, see http://velobase.com/Velos/ViewExample.a ... c&Enum=226 (Campag Record). Have a look for pictures of what Eddy Merckx was riding in 1976 as well. Bear in mind that "groupsets" were not the norm in 1976, and it was common to mix and match components. Centre pull brakes were still quite common on racing bikes; look at some archive racing pictures.
