1994 Marin Team Issue Resto

Gasket remover to peel off lacquer... How cool is that...

PeteMcc. Good info on replating... tubes are Tange Ultimate, so probably quite thin in the middle! Would you recommend a full re plate or more of a sympathetic restoration with new lacquer on top...

Pic of the bike and damage, middle pic not good but can see it bottom one... If I'd have known these were nickel plated BITD, I'd have had one over the IFT I bought...

Would look belting restored...

PS The forks are toast and the stem is best left unmentioned... Will look to get this back to as original as possible... bonus was the minty Controltech bars and half reasonable bar ends!

i'm sure i read on here about someone using scrunched up tin foil to remove laquer.

not 100% because i've had a rather sleep deprived week & can't be bothered searching for it but I think i'm right! (and its the thought that counts!)

Think that was me..... :D

Also used a scourer as well, nickel is tougher than people think, doesn't scratch easily (well, in my limited experience that is...!)

Example around the BB area,

Start scrubbing! ;)

ooh careful...these crack around the seat tube-bb join.

Ooooh, that could rule out replate...

Dossa... what a job, I think I might try it... need to upgrade this thread to full project status... going to use it for next weeks NW ride though...

i'd give that rust a scrubb first....couple of nasty looking black lines (hopefully ok). oh and that'll probably be a w.i bb too.

Will do chap, it would be a real shame if the frame was toast as well...

oooh, oooh, oooh, my favourite game is, is the BB going to be anything other than a UN52!!

:D

Current best result is a Ti GT unit.. was on a Pace RC500 though...

Good progress on the BB area. Rust has come away and it shows no cracks or other issues...

I will continue to do the rest of the frame with scourer pads and elbow grease.

Should come up nice... pics soon, but don't want to fully strip yet as planning to use it on NW ride next weekend!

Update:

Didn't end up using the TI for the NW ride the other week as the 8 speed XT shifter packed up...

Anyway, I've had a little time to play with the build. I've started the clean up on the frame and the BB area looks much better..

I bought a Pine Mountain frame/fork/bits off Rampage, and the headset, bar and bar ends have been put to use here.

Charlieboy supplied the lovely forks. Wheels are ones I had in... Currently trying to do a deal for the correct colour bar ends and some original Marin lite tyres - which I thought were OK BITD.

Gil will be contacted for decals but I need to get the frame fully ship shape first. As M900 bits turn up they will find their way onto here...
