That doesn't sound right :) Are you talking about the stop on the swingarm? Ignore that one if using Vs.
 
That one's for cantis, which were still just about hanging on when the bike came out. Never worked very well due to being off to one side. Only the earliest bikes have it.
 
Still think its odd that a frame such as this has no replaceable mech hanger.

It is a lovely frame though.
 
It's quite hard to bend, though :) That said, I did bend mine in the Lakes years ago. I bent it back, it didn't break and hasn't yet...
 
Yeah I agree Mike, it would be hard to damage beyond repair. But by 1996/7 most frames (alu) had replaceable hangers, they just make sense.
 
It's true. SC always argued that replaceable ones weren't stiff enough and hindered shifting, but I can't say I ever noticed :) Even now SC bikes have full replaceable dropouts rather than just hangers.
