A Period (In)correct Bike Project

swapping PART II (Athena rear mech)

for this Campagnolo Record rear mech I got off a bike Im building up for someone that was all shimano except for this part..

+ saves me 14 grams
+ has also got pullies that are in better shape
+ the logo is better
+ it cost me nothing, so It saves me, let's say €10

Looking forward to seeing the build up!

Bought these "REAR END FRAME DROP OUT / REAR WHEEL ALINEMENT ADJUSTERS" on ebay..

PRICE= €8 (posted)
WEIGHT= my estimate 10g maybe? -> scale says 10grams!

I've spend €200 on the project untill now btw..The budget side is still ok,
the weight side will be harder I guess.

Got ca. 4,5kg left for

-brakeset (calipers and levers) -> ca. 300g + 200g
-chainset -> ca. 750g
-headset -> ca 150g
-bottom bracket -> ca. 250g
-chain -> ca. 250g
-pedals -> ca. 300g
-cables -> ?
-wheelset ->?

=> TOTAL = approx. 2,1kg

As a consequence I will be having 2,4 kg left for the wheelset and cables ..

well I'll have to make some more swaps maybe,
could also cut the seatpost, which is 350mm long. But it's also new, so I prefer not to do that ..

Weight Issues (Ill have to go on a diet )

-chain -> ca. 250g (maybe KMC X8 92 Silver/Black )
-pedals -> ca. 300g

4,041 - 1,750 = 2,291kg

-cables -> ?!
-wheelset ->?!

I have a complete wheelset that I wanted to use, including cassette,rimtape,clinchers etc weighing 2,454kg
which is about 200grams to heavy because I havent taken the cables into account..

Any suggestions on wheels (rims,spokes,hubs,rimtape, etc) are welcome! Could probably change the plastic rimtape for ducktape, but that won't be sufficient, ... New Spokes, Hubs and/or Rim will be needed unless I can save weight on other components that I am using now:

Diet plans -> possible weight loss

PART I = 2,799kg (frame and fork)
PART II = 0,253kg -> 0,239kg (swap)
PART III = 0,290kg (could cut seatpost and probably save ca. 50 grams)
PART IV = 0,303kg (could take a smaller stem, or switch bolts with Ti bolts)
PART V = 0,327kg (got some lighter but less nice Bars I could go for)
PART VI = 0,013kg (seatpost bolt)
PART VII = 0,460kg (outer tires)
PART VIII = 0,155kg (inner tires/tubes)
PART IX = 0,277kg (could go for a lighter Saddle, but problem is that lighter saddles will 'weigh' heavy on my budget -> Maybe 'retro' selle italia Flite ti -> 220 grams [claimed])
PART X = 0,092kg (front derailleur)
PART XI = 0,054kg (bartape)
PART XII = 0,077kg (shifters)
PART XIII =0,010kg (could leave rear wheel adjusters)
PART XIV =0,230kg (brake levers)

Sorry, it may have been cryptic. Pictures are worth a 1000 words.

The more I read this, the more I like it. It's also a good education for me since it's been over 20 years since I built a road bike, and I'm get the itch for something similar; most parts I recognise well.

Some comments though based on being a bit of a weight watcher on the MTB side (http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewto ... highlight=)

- That seat-post seems heavy to me for a road post. What length do you actually need? Easton EA70 with logos removed?
- Long Ti bolt for the stem should bring the weight down
- Surprised at the saddle weight, I'm using vintage Rolls Ti which is not far off that. Is it Ti rails?
- You are well close to your weight limit, so I don't think you have much choice to go for DT Revolution spokes upfront and rear NDS and DT super comp on the DS. How many hole hubs are they?
