Kona Cinder Kone 1998

Kona Fan
Just found a virtually unused 1998 Cinder Cone on eBay, still had the original Break and Enter tyres on it. Paid just over £100 got it home and cleaned it up then replaced a few bits before taking it on a proper ride in the Lakes in the snow. Rode really well but the v-brakes and basic forks slowed the descents, looking to upgrade as soon as possible.

Thats a very nice bike for only a hundred squids. You bought well! It looks very similar to my 1998 Kona Explosif, but yours looks like it was in far better condition than mine before I fully restored it. I know a lot of collectors like the earlier Konas, but when you ride these 1998 ones with suspension correct geometry, they just feel right! :D :D :D

I may be wrong but I was pretty sure Kona used the same geometry from 1995-2000?

Anyways, nice Cindercone. Looks like Indy C's which are pretty basic. Follow the above example and get some Marzocchi Bombers will transform the ride.

Yes thats correct, earlier rigid fork ones are 1989-1994, later 70-80mm suspension correct ones are 1995-2000, thus a 1998 one falls into the later catagory.

Think it's '94 onwards has the suspension corrected geometry and was it not through and beyond the year 2000 they kept the same geometry?

The Explosif looks mint mate.

Tempted to swap the Reba forks from my Specialised FSR onto the kona, will this mess the geometry up too much?

Give it a try but I would have thourght the axle crown will be longer and push front end up too high. Can comepensate with a stumpy short stem but might still be a bit long. Try it and see. If you have the forks already no loss if it feels weird. Rebas are exceptional forks.

If you want to upgrade the v-brakes, Avid Single Digit 7 Vs are pretty cheap and powerful. I replaced first generation XT with them and I am amazed at the difference.
