just for the record my 98 SID forks use schraeder valves...?!

I think there is a kit that replaces the needle valve with schrader type. If you do have that, can you post a pic of it ? Im curious!
It seems less problematic. In fact thats probably the reason they moved from the needle thing.

It should be possible to get parts for your fork but you have to go to a place where they do service RS forks and have done it for a long time.

In 98 the forks had schrader as standard (but I have also seen 98 with needle but only the light XC model).

I have two links that hopefully can help you a little and if you cant get new tops give me a pm I think I know a place i Denmark where I can get a set for you if we are lucky.

The hole at the side shouldn't alter how it pumps up at all
If the needle is all the way in and air comes out of it when pumping then it's new valve time, it's buggered.
Taking it apart and inspecting the bottom you may see the end has 'blown off' i.e. torn away. or it's just perished.

Well I got it sorted out.
I dont know how many of you use early SID's, but from the replys I got, prly not that many. Still, I will share my solution that worked.
I replaced the needle valve to schrader with the help of this site :

https://www.outsideoutfitters.com/ps-15 ... alves.aspx

bought the 28mm version: cap 99-08 SID (28mm + alum crown)

and the end result was this :
