Why do some forks have a bearing seat around the bottom of the steerer tube and on others it is missing? For instance, I stripped a set of mag 20s off my bike and therer is a lovely smooth bearing seat, yet the Manitous I want to replace with do not have a bearing seat, just a dirty little old shim. Can I remove and swap the bearing seat off the mag20s? (it seems stuck tight) or do I have to fit a new one to the Manitous? If so where the heck from?

Stumped!

The bearing seat comes with the headset . each brand have different models . You can change the ones fron your Mag 20 to the Manitous if they are the same ( 1 1/8 or 1 ) , but it all depends on the headset you are going to use .

Thanks Chris, that is what I suspected. Guess I can crack off the seat from the Mag20s to use on the Manitous as I will be using the same headset.

I've lived here 30 years and I am STILL learning. English has got to be one of the most illogical, mongrel languages there is!
