Mavic headsets

Have been looking into the possibility of fitting a Mavic headset to my Look MI-80 at some point.

As far as I can see, the top cup/locknut is a one-piece construction except for the tightening band with the 2.5mm allen bolt.

Stack height is somewhat higher than the XT headset on the bike at the moment - but it looks as if this might not matter with the Mavic headset - just as long as the tightening section is screwed onto the fork and a little bit above it.

What I need to know is..... What is the PRACTICAL stack height of one of these, as opposed to the ACTUAL stack height all the way to the top - and whether anyone has tried something similar - and to what degree of success.

Mavic have a ranged stack height, it's part of the design. Though practical stack height is not just limited to how tall it is, but to weather you stem will go down that far (it should but I have seen shorter stem/quill parts)

It's range is 38 to 44mm and that official.

and yes I do have one still, had it since BiTD so I do know them :)

Fantastic- This is exactly what I needed to know.

Stem won't be a problem.

Next question - apart from the pricey NOS on Ebay ATM - anyone got one for sale?

I am not kidding here, but is there anything you don't know about? I've never seen advice so good - always spot on and ultra detailed!

I had a Mavic headset BITD and it was wonderful, the only issue I had was that my hamfisted teenage hands soon rounded off the grub screw that held it together.... :-(

I saw one earlier today somewhere for a reasonable price whilst hunting headsets, but dismissed it because of stack height issues and because it was the silver version, rather than black. If I get time I'll try to work out where it was I saw it.

I saw an NOS silver one on ebay today for £72 but it's in US so by the time postage and customs goes on top it's just too much. That's probably the one you mean.

Silver would be fine for me though - but black would be better.

No, I did see that one, but 'm sure I saw at least one cheaper. I'll see if I can find a link.
