Weight

Saving weight often comes from the "not so obvious" areas, skewers for instance, most shimano are 150g plus a set, try Control tech Ti Allen bolt, still available as a retro option as have been around for ages and just over 40g.
use a touring roadie 12-26 or 12-28 Cassette in 8s, plenty weigh 200g or less. The stem looks hefty at 186g! pleanty of retro at sub 150g.
Tyres and tubes offer lots of options to save.
Carefull BB and chainset choice and also pedals. Topline cranks are still one of the lightest and full on retro. I have a Cooks Ti bb in full 128mm axle that weighes 175g.
Vee brakes !!! Avid and others are way lighter than Shimano 50-60g per end. Brake levers the same.
Go for a USE alloy post and some nice carbon bars.

I'll bite, which stems do you suggest? I've read around a lot, and can't find anything much lighter from the early 90s?

Agree with you. I had a Kore light that was close to 150 This was much shorter than your stem.
Perhaps a Spesh ti stem would be lighter??

I could go shorter (not going to though), but I really couldn't find anything below 180ish, without going to unattainable handmade ti exotica. Then the £ vs gram just doesn't add up for me.

I beleive the specialised Ti stems are around 180g too?

Thanks for the tyres, they're a little skinny for my taste, but I thought I'd see what they're like (I'm a light guy anyway).

V brakes? I think not

Brakes front and back should see me at around 350g total. including pads and levers

My cranks are weighing in at 394g including both arms and spider (110BCD), how does that compare to the toplines? Still on the lookout for a nice BB.

<edit> Pedals are shy of 300g too.

that's really light! in the WW section on here and on the weightweenies site people measured between 160 and 170 grams for 135 mm ones. Maybee difference between the matt version and the polished one?

EDIT: I knew I read somewhere that specialized mentioned a 179 gram weight for this stem. It's in the '95 s-works catalogue (with the Steel frameset description, but isn't that the same stem for all the different frames?)

Think that's where I read it. Like I said, very few sub 170g stems out there.
