does anyone know, if the round top tube only was used in 1986 or so long as the bmx headtube and simplex drop outs was used? who by yeti cycles said: "ok, today we build a fro with round and tomorow we take an oval top tube." I've a round top tube fro and the seller has said it is from 1988.

cheers

I also have a round top-tubed FRO.

I visited the factory in 1995 in Durango and asked about the origins and was told they ran out of oval tubing so made a few with the round tubes.

Yours is the only other I've heard about. I'm not sure on the age of mine, but somewhere around 1986-88 sounds about right.

Nice FRO, silverfish!

Thanks :)

I know some more with round TT, bushpig has one and an other one is in Japan bought from the German forum some years ago and in Willisau/Suisse is one.....

Made some progress today. Now sorted the hubs and rims, just got to wait for them to arrive and then get them built. Will keep the details secret for the time being as am dreading they may not even arrive! But if they do, they will certainly compliment the rest of the build.

This FRO was originally going to be quite a sensible spec and i was going to be a little bit more extravagant on the Ultimate. But once i got started i couldn't help myself...

So I now have the IRD seat post and turbo saddle fitted, and the headset. No pics I'm afraid I will take some tomorrow, ended up that the headset top nut wouldn't take the FTW quill stem so a 10 minute job turned into 2 hours. Plus we haven't stocked 1" headset spacers at SF for a very long time so luckily the guys at Certini helped me out. Got to drag my favourite tool out the workshop tonight though, a 6" bastard file which hasn't been used for quite some time. As you can see it did the trick, top nut now fits nice and smooth :)

Will hang a few more bits tomorrow and upload some pics.

Still waiting on some Bullseye BB bearings before i can fit the cranks - hopefully they won't be too far away

Keep your eyes peeled for minty 730 canti's in black and true temper bars in white please guys.

And still haven't decided whether to build it with the Hite Rite or not

looking forward to see this finished (I stole your xmas card...)

the quill of the ftw stem has 22.2 and the top nut is from a 1" bmx headset, so it has 21.1. but you did a great job

Yeah I figured that was the issue. I'm guessing that my 'fix' is the exact same thing I would have done in 87 too

Some more pics as promised. It's starting to at least look like a bike now.

I probably need to cut the steerer down on the fork. Really didn't want to have to do that hence why I've used a 10mm spacer. Bearing in mind how difficult these original Yeti forks are to find it would feel like sacrilege to take a pipe cuttter to the steerer tube. Just not sure it looks 'right' with the big spacer sat in there - makes the headset assembly look huge.

It's sat in my office staring at me so I guess a decision will get made based on how annoying it becomes

Still on the lookout for a white True Temper bar and minty FRO 730 canti's in black. And have to wait for the Bullseye bearings a few more days yet, and my wheels won't be ready this side of the New Year so I guess this will have to do for the time being.

Have a Merry Christmas everyone. :xmas-big-grin:

Sourced some IRD seatpost decals courteousy of Gil - and now received the rims. Well pleased with these - circa 1985 so definitely suitable for an 87 build.

Am now considering getting a black bar sprayed white. Or controversially, speccing a fluoro yellow TT bar on the build. Adds a little 80's razzamatazz  It's period correct and is a reasonable spec for the time - my all black and white build may be a little too subtle for 1987.

The fluoro yellow is growing on me...

Good to know it arrived safely :) The fluo yellow grew on me too. I've half of my stable specced with that bar. It looks cool and it is safe.
