I have had good luck in the past with nail varnish applied with the remainder being polished off on a set of Middleburns.

Agreed re the tipex it wont last ......
 
The grime is not grime but bare metal if I remember correctly and is how they came. So bare steel. must be something to protect it, but didn't seem like it (as it was just like where the paint has come off)
The rest is I assume powder coat and the logo machined on later (this was 1992, CO2 laser might have done it, but I forget when they where first used for labelling this sort of thing.

Paint the tip-ex on, wait a couple of seconds then rub the excess off.

I'll probably do it a bit better later on.
