File off the sides of the pads at a 45° angle, then sand them down a bit.
Like the pads in the picture below, but 45° instead of the shallow angle here.

Not necessarily. I filed mine down at a 45° angle, which ony made the contact patch 3-ish mm smaller.
Can't say I noticed a loss in braking power, but I certainly noticed that mine don't squeal anymore.
