Hope this scumbag gets caught and the people who have been affected get their money back

Received a call from the police this morning, so I now have a crime reference number: 0325238-11

If/when anyone else logs the crime, it will be worth mentioning this, enabling them.to.cross.reference the reported incidents.

Jon, I wonder if you could.update the first post to include this advice?

For those following the story so far, this has now been passed from the local police force to a more specialised unit. Things were mentioned about accessing paypal records etc, but I will point them in the direction of this thread, as there has been some sterling detective work thus far.

As soon as I hear back from the police I will let you all know.

concerning PP
Then i selected "unauthorised transaction". In comments i wrote about fraudulence and gave link to this thread. PP freezed account for a while, i had to change pswd and security questions. Now it's all ok, money returned but in $ not pounds.

Just done the same, although I forgot the bit about adding a reference to this thread so we'll see what happens.
Left the details a bit vague (were any personal details altered?: no, have you changed pwd yet?: no, Comments?: none)

Fingers crossed.

If that don't work, then plan B is to visit the plod with Ian's crime number and add my events and emails to the big picture.

I just ran a whois on the IP.
Try 94.192.36.215

Ran that.

Came up with Leeds aswell. No name or address there, but there is full name, address and phone number for the network provider:

Name: AVATAR-GB
descr: Leeds O2 Residential Dynamic
country: GB

Jamie Patrick Mcgee 260 Bath Road
(There is more address, but probably not great to post it all just yet. And it's not in Leeds either.)
I'm not sure if it's any use, this stuff is way out of my league but this dude probably has a name and address on file somewhere if we/police get desperate for clues.

Just a thought, if you paid paypal as a gift should you really tell them you were actually buying things?

Not particularly on topic but I would hesitate to be posting names and addresses here, perhaps share them by PM with others involved?

Information from the RIPE database is public, anyone can run a whois or nslookup and view names addresses etc.. I wouldn't trust the geoip or iptracker stuff either. Before you round up a posse and gallop off towards Leeds it currently thinks I'm in Nantwich - an error of nearly 80 miles .

One of our IP customers in Norfolk complains he can't buy lottery tickets because the geoip database says his IP is in France even though the RIPE database shows it as UK registered.

If there is an address I dont mind hand delivering a polite letter encouraging him to return the money. I honestly don't mean a nasty or threatening note, just a pointer that returning the money would be the right thing to do and that his "work" is being investigated by the police. . I work all around Leeds every day.
