1994 / 96 Parkpre Pro Elite Ti - Retro-modern Winter Hack

Headset

My winter tweak to get the Cane Creek S2 reasonably crud proof is:
- get new replacement cartridges
- remove the seals
- flush out the very little crap stock grease
- force in Propeller Shaft Grease (or marin grease?)
- put seals back
- add more liberal coatings of Propellar Shaft Grease in the cups
and the top of the neoprean crown
- fit and forget for the season
- following season, swap the cartridges between top and bottom.

Handlebars & Stem

Got lucky again and found some NOS 25.4mm Titec Enduro XC flat bars. I routinely cut bars down to 540mm, which now gives a respectable 166 grams without any need for BERTS (unlike Easton EA70 I've tried and crimped, and EC70 which was an exercise in "how far can you go" with the allen key).

For the stem, it's a de-logoed EA50 120mm 10 degree and the 15mm spacer is some modern weight weenie new fangled aluminium light thingy from BBB. Total is a reasonable 204 grams.

Brake Levers

Modern Tektro's MT3.0 Carbon Eclipse v-brake come in at 180 grams.

Not light, but they will do the job.

Shifter

Got some second hand XT M751 9-speed, but they will be cleaned up and tweaked.

I pull them to pieces, flush out all the gunky grease and grime and use light sewing machine mineral oil. They literaly work like clockwork after and only need the occasional oiling to keep them smooth running.

I then remove the indicator window, and seal the hole by using the "cover" that is on the bottom of the shifter lever shaft. A spot of super glue on the inside then fixes it in place. Simple, but effective.

I will be running 1 x 9, so the total shifter weight comes in at 115 grams.

Bar Ends & Grips

Keeping to my favorites, Tioga Power Studs 6 (166 grams) and Lizard Skins Northshore Lock-On (140 grams). Not light, but no sacrifices to comfort on the contact points for this build.

Rear Mech

I will be using a Short Cage road-mech. An older model 105 that gives flashbacks of the old LX M56* ones. Unfortunatly the jockey wheels don't seem to last long in cruddy conditions, so they get the Tacx treatment.

227 grams in total.

Cassette

9-speed Road cassette from SRAM. Comes in at 228 grams. Cheap enough to chuck away after a few seasons.

Wheels

A fairly newish set of Mavic Crossride Center Lock. A very good value for money wheelset IMHO and fully servicable. I've taken all the logo's off to get them looking clean and stealthy.

Front actual: 906 grams
Back actual: 1046 grams

For the skewers, I'm using some Halo XL allen key ones. Cheap and light at 66 grams a pair.

Tyres & Tubes

For mud duties it's Panaracer Trailraker 1.95". They take some getting used to, but inspire confidence in crap conditions. 1072 grams for the pair.

Tubes are Schwalbe AV14A - serious Schrader valve weight-weenie stuff at 206 grams a pair. I'm not using the retarded clear plastic valve caps though...
