1991 20" GT Zaskar - rebuilt to take on holiday

Thanks, from my couple of rides on it so far it feels like it flies!

I expected to feel a lot more of the bad road surfaces, but it hasn't at all and it feels like I have to put barely any effort in at all. Early days, but I might have to increase the gearing (currently 42:14 with 175mm cranks).

Hehe, anything will be faster than the lead-framed Alaska with boulders for wheels!

Looks very clean and speedy! We'll have a ride out soon to work it out :)
Provided this man-flu fooks off.

Having re-weighed it and seen how close it is to 10kg/22lbs I'm tempted to try to shave off a little weight just to hit that target.

I've been trying to get some secure Ti skewers to replace the quick-releases, so I'll see how close it is after that.

That ubrake is a boat anchor... i just took my similar year Zaskar apart! I agree with the other comments... strip the paint and put on some retro decals.

I will definitely strip the frame at some point. I probably need to have more of my bikes on the road though, before taking this one off.

Still not sure about the decals, as I'm concerned it might make people more keen on trying to steal it.

I found out the downside of the slim tyres/tubes out riding on Sunday, when a concealed curb in the cycle path burst both the tubes. On the plus side, I didn't find any hills in the 30 mile ride that I couldn't make it up, so definitely might try a 44T chainring on the front.

I'll keep my eye's out for a blue triple triangle passing me as I plod along. Though I'll probably be offroad.

Get the other built then start faffing (says me )

Re: 1991 20" GT Zaskar Single Speed Project FINISHED (for n

Completely rebuilt with parts I had kicking around, other than a newer M750 front mech I had to buy and a Hope rear wheel kindly lent to me by FluffyChicken.

Too late for pics or even testing tonight, I'll try to ride to work on it tomorrow and if I don't get pictures before they will be taken on holiday!

Re: 1991 20" GT Zaskar

Finally, it's built up for the terrain it was designed for:

Hopefully later in the summer I'll have time to continue stripping the paint.

Just built up with DX, XTR and Hope wheels thanks to FluffyChicken lending me a rear wheel to match my front.

I was surprised how well it rode on the road as I tested it out on my way to and from work. It's all running very smoothly, other than a sticking freehub that I'm just fixing now.

I'm looking forward to riding it up in Arran so much :) I think it's completely redressed my disappointment at not being able to take the Richter 8.0.
