Found the ES71 (XT of this era) that looks like it should use the xtr tool and is v2 splines on the axle and what is probably fitted here, but it also has the splines on the inside for the normal tool if yours has a large enough hole in the middle (I assume like he one I linked to as that's listed as octalink)

Thats the one, Ive had some that don't have the splines on the inside just the XTR interface on the out side, not sure if the op's is this type :roll:

That shows a HollowTechII bottom bracket which is newer and the modern setup. completely different and different tools.

Plus this tool for the non drive side.

No that's for old fashioned bottom bracket, pre cartridge. So early 90's and before that (generally)


The Weldite on looks like it will do the job but you'll still need the other one for the other side (if you have one for square tapers it might fit if you can try it first). I would check to see if you can see any splines on the inside of the bottom bracket cup on the drive side. If you can then you'll not need that weldtite one but just the standard spline version.

According to the the Shimano Octalink/HollowTech-1 will always have the internal splines on them even with the outside one's. Only some ISIS have external notches only.

Yep it does have the 20 splined teeth on both sides at a closer inspection.

As Park Tool say " The eight external notches on the cup flange are not used for removal"

Strange as I run three bikes with octalink BB's and Ive always used a five pence to remove the cranks with a normal crank extractor,
it kills the five pence but it dose work.

Maybe it depends on the crank being used

Eventually removed with a shimano end plug on a standard crank extractor. Then is tool:
