That why I use park's external BB tool, it grip the whole cup not ust part of it.

how the hell did you manage that?

the shimano tool, or at leasthe one I have, is a C shaped spanner that goes over the splines.

you were turning it the correct way? Chainwheel side is LH thread, other side is RH thread.
