This was a bit of an impulse buy, but something that has worked out quite nicely. Initially I was after a set of suspension forks for my Giant XTC. However, by the time I had weighed up buying some forks it worked out that by stripping the Giant I could get a complete new bike for very similar money. So that's what I did!

On a day off from work I popped in to my local bike shop and they had a 17.5" Specialized Stumpjumper in stock from 2010. A deal was struck and it was mine. I'd bought the same model from them back in 2002/3, so it's a bit of history repeating itself. I kept the 02/03 Stumpy for three or four years and did lots of miles on it. It was a great bike that never felt out of its depth. So I knew the more modern version would meet my expectations.

The 2002/3 model I bought (after a bit of tinkering):

And many bikes later its 2010 replacement:

It weighed 24.8lbs out of the box. I've since changed the cassette to an SLX one and the front mech to an XT one, and it's now 24.6lbs.

Nice Buy. Which local bike shop do you use - I didn't realize there was a decent one in that part of the world?

There's a few good ones in the Lakes! I use The Bike Bank, who stock Giant and Specialized bikes, amongst others. Biketreks in Ambleside and Keswick Mountain Bikes are two other good ones. There's Wheelbase too, in Staveley :)

Thanks for that - I meant West Cumbria i.e Whitehaven, Egremont etc. Good to see Workington has someone decent.

Sure the ride will be superb, but modern Specialised's colour matching is certainly a marmite thing I reckon - love it or hate it. Not subtle at all!

Started a little bit of tweaking now on the Stumpy. Thinking of going 2 x 9 to help avoid trail centre related big ring bashing (ow er!). Also just bought a set of Hope wheels. Was original thinking of getting a Hope rear hub, but ended up buying a pair of wheels. May look to fit the Hope hubs to the Red DT/Specialized rims already on the bike, but will see how I feel. Got a decent jig at work so wouldn't be too bad to do. Nice pair of Red Hope QR levers will add some bling too.
