Eggbeaters v's SPD's

I've only ever used SPD's and can't fault them. I've heard Eggbeaters can be bent by rock strikes.

I used to use Sspuds, and now use CB pedals (eggbeaters, mallets and candys)

Spuds:
Pros - last for ever, good solid engagement, adjustability of spring tension.
Cons - heavy, limited float, difficult to service., clog up easily.

Eggbeaters:
Pros - light, loads of float, never clog, easy to service/rebuild, look cool.
Cons - bearings need replacing every 1-2 years, brass cleats wear out quite quickly.

I use both, the SPD have the edge on the Eggbeaters for engageing.

SPD last forever.

Havent managed to clog a Eggbeater yet.

.

tried both at different price levels and spd win every time. spd will last a life time.

Had SPDs on my Zaskar and loved them, nice solid lock when on the bike, I have now moved to CB MXR eggbeaters for the massive weight saving, and they clip in very nicely with enough freedom to stop your knees aching, so to summarise....

Shimano, will last a lifetime if looked after but heavy
Eggbeaters, will last long if looked after but being much lighter wont take as much abuse ;)

i have 4 sets of spds, they are great no issues, reliable and reasonable on the wallet, egg beaters are lighter though.

stubbsy :D

Shimano cleats are standard on other spds who's pedals are as light as eggbeaters such as xustars.

I moved on to SPD's 6 years or so ago and have never looked back.

My mate tried Eggbeaters + Mallets but has gone back to flats.

Take from that what you will ;)
