Snake stays

Is there any advantage in snake stays,, or is it just an affectation?
I can't help wondering, "What's the point of that, then?"

I think they are supposed to keep out of the way of spinning heels/ankles, classic svelte steel frames rarely have a problem...
You also want snake stays to offer some kind of subtle supension, not sure if it makes a difference or not. Poss not a lot on alloy...

:?:

They increase both heel and tyre clearance and give the seat stays the ability to flex a little due to their shape but it's more noticeable on thinner steel frames.
