its a tragic disease this old bike thing...

While searching for bits for my recently acquired '88 SM400, I came across this.

$110 NZ peso later, its mine. Haven't seen it in the flesh yet, but there has to be the value in parts alone.

not sure what the £ to NZ$ exchange is like but that seems like a lot of bike for the money! Got to be worthwhile at that price. :D

works out to 40 quid stu...

Originally came from Blighty apparently, and the Pace fork is a pretty rare thing over here. Can you still get parts for the fork?

40 quid well spent mate

justbackdated (tim) on here is a specialist in pace stuff ,give him a pm

Well done mate - I was also offered this bike for $110 from the seller (I live in Wellington and asked him if he would take $100). I think you've got a bargain to be honest. I have just bought a Kona Fire Mountain from Hamilton, so couldn't justify both of them!

I was mainly after the forks.... I think you can get new elastomers from Pace direct?

Also, If the shifters are Shimano Thumbies (Deore or XT) and you do not want them... any chance I could have first refusal?

Cheers

Seems we are after the same bits of kit! I was watching that fire mountain, but had a twinge of guilt (missus looking over my shoulder) and couldn't hit the button

Mmmm - already checked out elastomers - $49USD for a kit.

Sorry, but it was the thumbies that swung the deal for me!

No worries... I hope it turns out to be a good deal. To be honest the Thumbies and Forks alone were worth the asking price.

Good luck on your builds. I hope the Fire Mountain is worth the money I paid.

You start buying bargains, next thing you know, there's a bike shop in your garage/shed/spare room!

ok, so I picked the M400 up last night.

Its a perfect size for me so thats +1

The Pace fork is an RC35 wit ha Kevlar logo on it - any clues guys? Its action is pretty bad so it will need stripping and cleaning at least and probably the new elastomers.

The componentry has all been upgraded at some stage - the thumbies are Deore 7 speed, rear mech is an LX unit front an LX, front brakes are old old Vs while the rears look to be Coda canti's. Pedals are Deore XT! A USE post and Flight saddle to perch on and a pretty ugly quill stem with Kooka bars and FUGLY bar ends(!) at the front.

Lots of minor rust and broken fiddly bits - brake outer cables, the QR levers etc, and some bubbling of paint suggesting a bit of aluminium rot happening, but not a lot or in serious locations.

All in all, I think I got a good but not killer deal.

I'll clean the three years of grime off this weekend and see what lies beneath!

Can't beat the excitement of the initial clean, evaluation of the current componentry and then the dreaming of how want it to look eventually.
