CANNONDALE M700 = BEAST OF THE EAST

Years ago I had an incredibly light CANNONDALE M700, the frame weighed 3.2lbs and the complete bike (Deore, Evoulution headset, etc) in 16" weighed approx 26lbs, which 20 years ago was amazing.

At the time CANNONDALE (BEAST OF THE EAST) and ALPINESTAR (T24?)did small inch frames with a high bottom bracket, intended for smaller people or those who wanted the crotch clearance for jumps.

Did anybody have one of those? What was it like to ride, any photos?

It was designed with a raised bottom bracket, but not particularly a smaller frame iirc.

Specialised S-Bike and the Trimble are two others that use that similar design.

My old Cannondale, REVAMPED!

Wow remember my Cannondale?

Anyway it had the legendary massive EVOLUTION headset, I put an EVO 1/4 to Aheadset 1/8 adapter cups, a nice Aheadset/stem/riser bars, then some Marzocchi Bombers on it, and had it sprayed blue, threw the pivot brakes away (Remember those instead of a straddle), and fitted some great DEORE V brakes to it, then some twat nicked it! The spray job even had TOP TUBE decals with my name on my bike (S. RANDS), and I updated the model number (To something else, 1000, so reflect it's new componentry level!) so if you see it grab it back!

The Alpinestars eh, my younger brother still has his hardly used mint ALMEGA DX. The blue/white one that looks modern, similar to this photo.

Funnily enough I don't remember which shops used to sell them locally, maybe Freetown Sports or Kingston Cycles?

Talking of shops have you ever been above ROCK CITY (Hawthorn Av: Between Hessle Rd and Anlaby Rd)? Well top floor there is a bike shop called "WE LOVE MOUNTAINS",



They have very nice bikes, that you'll appreciate, few below £3k though!

As much as I'd like a quality full sus, I don't need one, especially round Hull, but obviously on jumps a quality full sus would mean bigger air time! And you know how much I enjoy lots of air! Huge jumps I love them. But finding a quality, sub 16" (less then) full sus bike isn't great.
My hardtail is really a 13" (Once top tube passes the seat tube the end measures 16"), as you remember I'm not tall! Well I certainly haven't seen many 13" full sus quality bikes in shops or any of the mags recently!

Anyway nice to see £50k's worth of bikes!

Worth a look sometime, if you thought Freetown Sports had the biggest range of the bikes with the highest RRP.

Yes I remember your bike titchy little red thing with big tubes and an dropouts you could stand on, and Chrisv40 has one but too big for you and he scrapped the Force40's (the canti rocker) recently.

Yer, I couldn't find the most appropriate category at a glance.

Yer those photos of that Cannondale does look just like my old version, just bigger.

Hmm those photos are of a Cro-Mega, Andreas' is a Al-Mega, yer he still has that little beauty, he has a very very nice apartment in London, over looking the Thames. Guess Joanne Moody, his missus, probably gets annoyed with Al-Mega resting over a table or something, he probably uses it to prop something up, or as a chair, or something.

Cannondale Pepperoni ~ 750 grams!

Yes that Cannondale was a very light bike for the mid 1990's, including a rigid fork 25lbs!

Remember rigid forks!

It had Cannondale Pepperoni alu forks (1/4" Evolution ~ Pre-Aheadset), they weighed a wafer light 750g!

Would I go back to RIGID FORKS? No way they're too unforgiving!

Never mind that suspension forks are heavier, the comfort factors of reducing impacts and reducing fatigue are far more important.

COMPARISON NOTE:
RockShox Judy TT (2004)
Travel: 100mm
Weight: 3.96 lb. (1.80 kg = 1800 Grams)

So my FRONT SHOX are about 1050g heavier (1kg approx) then my ULTRA LIGHT RIGID FORKS, I think that is very impressive of my front shox.

The small BOE is a rare beast as some years the BOE was not sold as a small frame.

I had a Beast of the East M800. Originally the dark purple, though I had Argos make it red. Very light fully rigid and a harsh ride. It did climb very well due to the low weight. Loved the oversize downtube and Pepperoni forks.
