1987 Raleigh wheel question

I bought a 1987 Raleigh Record Sprint from eBay a month or so back with intentions of rebuilding this with modern parts. More an exercise in getting to know bikes than anything else. I've bought Charge Dish Wheels (available at Evans) but find they don't fit. It seems the forks are too narrow for the axle/hub.

Can anyone help me - Evans in London recommended these to me, but I think I need 27" wheels instead?

Thanks all!

Andy

It'll be 700c for 1987.

I presume it's just the rear wheel that doesn't fit? It's because wheels have got wider over time as manufacturers have added more and more sprockets to the hub.

You have two options - buy older wheels or reset the frame width (look on here or google for "cold setting"). A frame builder can do it for you, but the cost will probably be more than you paid for the bike.

Good luck!

I bought Charge Dish Wheelset from Evans, and that wasn't the right size (700c with 120mm spacing).
Any idea of the spacing i'm looking for?

I'm a newbie, so please don't hate me ;-)

Thanks

Andy

this may be a really stupid suggestion, but have you tried measuring the gap between the forks? :/
