You see that last picture of Sinnerman's scan? That is how the gearing should look. I think mountain bikes lost something aesthetically when chainrings went small. The large ring should overlap with the tyre like these do. Maybe it is the roadie in me but the fact the chain slopes down from the top of the chainring to the sprockets just adds something to the bike for me.

Despite bing old and fat I'm desperately holding on to my non-compact gears on the road!

Lovely bike especially the look of the gears!
