I just can't get out enough on my bike for my liking with commitments at home so I'm figuring the next best thing is some sort of turbo trainer thingy. Just plonk my bike on it in front of the telly and spin away.

I don't know anything about these things, but having had a very basic one before I'm after something with magnets this time for realistic and smooth resistence. Anybody got anything?

If you decide to buy new, I've got the Elite Elastogel Mag and it's pretty sweet for the money...recommended.

You might want to use a road bike, or at the very least, a slick rear tyre
(think VROOM, VROOM, VROOM coming from the shed at night  ).
They eat your MTB tyres.
Have you thought of rollers as an alternative? Great fun and far more 'natural' to ride.

I have some old rollers , my grandfather had them . the whole bike goes on them , a bit tricky af first but it does improve your balance on the bike a lot .

and yes it does eat tyres a lot .

Sliiiiiiiicks. Easy. Then again, I just put my missus bike on the machine and use that. Saves bolting/unbolting the Bonty or putting a slick on the Kona! :D

Edit: Haven't tried rollers but can't for the life of me figure out how you would balance on them...

It looks tricky, but in reality it is very easy! Its just like riding your bike normally.
I used them a lot when riding my track bike, for keeping the legs turning between races.

I use a really nice one that had the rollers that run on the rim rather than the tyre, avoids the need for slicks quite nicely and I can't notice any difference between that one and my old tyre driven one (except that it is a hell of a lot quieter!)

This is like the fella, although I thought mine was a lot cheaper...

Thanks for input guys. I ended up buying the 'cycleops mag' new (£63 from wiggle). I did a bit of research and rollers needed too much concentration if using over an hour or watching telly at same time. Fan ones didn't offer enough resistance and were noisy. Fluid were too expensive so a low end quality mag is where I went.
