How do I free up caliper brakes

Over the winter my roadie hard a hard life...Then it got left in the cellar for a few months.

Next weekend I have a triathlon so I've started tidying it up...All fine now save for the brake calipers. They worked ok before but not when you pull them on they dont release. I cleaned them up and I have been working them through their range to get them going but still not as should be.

Any tips for "freeing them up" so they dont stick on when the lever is pulled.

They are fairly old single pivot shimano exage jobbies.

Thanks
Dan

Grease at the pivot points, undo centre bolt and get some grease down around the washer/nut/bolt then refasten. Should move freely now ;)

Strip, clean, lightly oil or grease. When you reassemble them make sure the nut on the front is only tightened to the point that the brakes release.

Check whether it is the cable or the caliper first - loosen the cable pinch bolt and lube the cable. Then squeeze the caliper shut by hand. If it binds you need to pull it apart to free up the mechanism and lube it.
