splatter painted rims...

Just built up some wheels for my girlfriend's tourer / CX bike (a Pake C'Mute). She decided on white Halo Aerorage 32 hole rims on gold hubs, so I sourced a a pair of Shimano M570-G (the rear through this forum came from Denmark in minty condition and the front was an online NOS purchase). Once I'd done the spoke calculations, she decided to splatter paint the rims while we waited for the spokes to arrive

After practicing on an old worn-out rim which she had painted white with some household emulsion, she masked off the braking surfaces on the Halos and used three little pots of Humbrol enamel and three toothbrushes to get the effect she wanted. She worked very slowly, one side at a time, and was glad she practiced first!

After letting them dry for a week, I got down to business... Once built up three cross (took me about 6 hours!), she cleaned the rims off with a cotton bud and some white spirit followed by a thorough soapy water wash and rinse. Bearing in mind these are only the second and third wheels I've ever built I'm happy with my bit, and she's over the moon with the rims.

I was initially very sceptical, but I think they look brilliant now... she's always right
