Identifying Giant World Cup, and fork thoughts

Hi all,

So this is my bike and I'm loving this project - have never taken on anything like this before.

Can anyone identify the frame and/or give me any further info? I haven't the first idea what it is? Bought on ebay with forks for £36 plus £20 postage.

Having stripped the forks RockShox Judy 2's, and put them back together, they seem in relatively good order - the internals seem ok, despite the spring guide being more corroded than anything I've ever taken off a bike before - looked like it came off the bottom of the sea bed. But it's in the non-oil side, so I don't see it doing a whole lot of harm.

But what's bothering me is (1) the donkey choking amount of travel - I just don't get it. I think it's 125mm though looks and feels like more, and it's way too much for a bike like this (even my LBS did a double take), and (2) it's leaking oil from the seal on the right-hand fork.

Is this just a seal? I can't really see what else it could be? It's not coming out of the bottom at all. Is it repairable? Are the parts/seals available?

Am I just better off with a different fork? What would my budget options be? I'd like cheap and light, and good would be cool if poss..?

On my old (stolen - that the bastard cycled past me on. Had it back and then it was stolen again, and THEN tonight cycled past the git whilst on my 'new' bike who stole my old one. Police didn't press charges and I still have tendon damage from getting my old one back 1 year later ;)) bike, I had Raidon forks. I don't mind Suntours again - anyone have any thoughts about XCM V2s? Or would that be a 'down grade' from the Judys? Or not if the Judys are not functioning as they should? Or are there better options?

Any thoughts gratefully received. I don't know loads about anything, but I sure don't know a lot about forks, and I know even less about budget forks.

Cheers all. Great forum, BTW - people have been falling over to help...

giant atx team?
have a look on bikepedia for relevant years etc.

i always thought the judys came in at 100mm travel? (and an 80mm? maybe possibly a 120 too then   my mates j3's were 100)
erm the suntour forks are on a similar par
if you have the cash though
id recommend you upgrade
but i wont suggest anything until you can specify a budget? (sure someone else will though  rock shox sids? approx. £100 (ish))

do you think the person before may have taken the forks apart and taken the spacers out?
potentially dangerous

i cant find the atx team on bikepedia, you will find some that are full sus aswell, thats a downhill bike, also called the atx team although i thought they were just atx but they did have it as a team frame so there you go!)

Hiya mate - thanks for your input...

Dude, if you knew the hours I've binted away on Bikepedia trying to place the damned thing. It ain't there, or on the Giant archives - though I have realised that, like the true muppet that I am, I didn't include a close up of the frame decal, which says World Cup Team.

I don't think it's the ATX which I had think had disk mounts - there's certainly no mention of ATX anywhere.

So is it possible its the 'team issue' bike - that is, not on general sale?

Spacers - don't know. What would they look like?

You're right the J2s came in 80/100/120 - I don't really know how to 'measure' travel, but if the moveable fork inner travelled 125mm into the down section, there would be about 35mm of visible stanchion left. This doesn't sound outrageous to me - it just looks so so wrong to me.

I could change the spring stack to 80mm but the parts are long since unavailable, I guess? And I was coming to think that maybe it wasn't worth it - maybe 'better forks' is the answer? But maybe not..?

M absolute budget for the rest of the bike for the foreseeable future is £100. I could blow the lot on forks (SIDs? Flexy? My missus has the new ones on her 2010 Giant X1 Anthem, but I gather that avoided the old issues?). That said, all I've done so far is transport the junk parts from her knackered old Diamondback, so the spec is all Acera, etc.

The front chainrings are missing about 5% of their teeth - they would stand replacing, and I have visions of changing it to 9 speed, though I can hardly say it's essential.

The bars DEF need changing - I love the look of flat bars, but the seat post is already past its extension and is a tiny bit too short for me (on the road - off-road, the bike's perfect => 17.5", and I'm 5' 10").

I can change little things in the future - a tenner here, a tenner there - but my absurdly over budget wedding :? in a month's time means I've gotta be realistic about this bike, which - hand on heart - started out as a cheap replacement for a crap bike with the hope that it would be marginally less crap, and is becoming an obsession!!

So part of the tough job for me is prioritising my remaining £100 - where would I see most bang per buck. Didn't say I have a front wheel with disc brake on the way (outside of £100), and know that I have to stick with V brake out back as there are no disc brake mounts...

Arrived on Thurs, buddy. Brilliant, thanks so much. +1 for being a perfect trader on here, though there can't be anyone here who doesn't know that, I imagine.

My school reception are now quite used to the idea that I have a bike arriving one bit at a time, though they couldn't work out if it was a saddle or a leg of lamb... :)

It's great. Just what I had in mind, cheers!

BTW - that pic reminds me. Don't suppose anyone has any old 1 1/8" aheadset top cap out there. Just the cap, not the bolt, etc. I scavved one from my LBS, bless them, but it was silver, and looks a bit of a mess... :)

be like a couple of dabs from CRC :)

Changing gear is like a Rubik's Cube ATM - I really have to think it through..! :)

Am loving the new front disc brake, but am also looking forward to my separate rear gear lever arriving...
