Quick Q...I think I know the answer....but are 7800 STi's compatible with 7700 calipers...I can't see why not...I think I might be getting confused with the very latest DA STi's with the under-tape cable routing that has a different pull and therefore not compatible

Yes they are. 7700 brake cables were run under bar tape just like they are today.

And 7800/7900 STIs would run 7700 rear mech as 10 speed anyway.

You're muddling 7600 up, which had a slightly different pull ratio, with 7700.
