Thankyou - have messaged for the size - what are the main differences between 501 and 531?

This one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VINTAGE-PEUGEOT-R ... 519wt_1141 appeals to me - although right at the top of my budget and I don't know enough to know whether it's a good buy or best avoided.

I'm fairly technically minded and hands-on but don't have experience of putting a bike together, I'm very willing to learn though.

I think thats a Routier PKN 10 from circa 1981:

Not sure if its all 531, forks dont appear to have sticker, so most likely just the main 3 tubes/triangle are 531.

Doesnt look in bad condition, but might just be a bit over-priced for my liking. Perhaps someone else with more experience can comment.

ps think i may be tempted myself on this one would deffo change the bar tape though needs to be plain white
well would be tempted if i had room! lol reckon the saddle and wheels are worth the advertised price alone!

531 and 501 are basically different steel alloys. (531 is maganese-molybdenum and 501 chromium-molybdenum)

Basically theres nothing wrong with 501, especially if it comes with 501 (or even 531 sometimes) forks. 531 was offered in many different thicknesses, plain gauge, butted (tubing wall thickness varies along its length, thus resulting in less material and less mass)

See here for some of the stickers denoting various framesets that could be used.

A butted 501 frame and forks could easily be as light as a frame built with 3 main 531 butted tubes but with the stays/forks made from std hi-tensile steel (or some other less exotic steel alloy).

So I'm guessing the one on ebay is number 25 "3 Tubes Reinforces" (from as much as I can make out on the photo).

It does seem a bit pricier than some of the past stuff I've seen go on here, but I'm impatient, and really want to have something to get out and about on now that the weathers getting warm - does this kind of thing come up very often on here/ebay/lfgss?

Bowser - have already messaged the bike you linked up for a size, fingers crossed.

Think I'm definitely going to try and hold out for a decent frame either way - thanks for all your help so far.

heres another pot boiler for you.
nice old carlton pro-am 531 frame tubes. the forks are probably high tensile . just needs tidying probably new wheels. will be raleigh built i think
not as nice as the peugeot but would make a good restoration project
for the money. decent brooks saddle etc
although the frame is 531 its probably heavier than the 501 pug
as the tubing will be plain gauge. confused you bet!
sorry its "up north " again but i tend to limit my searches if poss in case i can view first.
food for thought anyway gives you an idea whats out their bargain wise
check the e bay etc watch forum on here too usually some helpful links
to bikes etc in there
cheers bowser

thanks - still waiting for the size on that other one. I really like the decals and look of the peugeots (design student), i know it's a bit shallow and i could probs get something cheaper and just as good but i've got my heart set on it now.

There's a lovely looking gold 531 frame on french ebay. Really wish it had a bike attached to it.
