Seen kids on home brew choppers before. 26" wheel on the front and 20" on the back. Looked pretty cool.

I think that changing either the brake or the brake lever would be a generally more satisfactory solution to this problem

Brake lever change isn't an option.

Could try bolting some purple canti's on I guess...

Seen a few pics of bikes running a 26 front and 24 rear now though...
