who is your top cycling hero and why?

Bernard Hinault has long been my hero for the way he trounced the opposition no matter what race it was. if he decided to win then he usually would win. he wasn't interested in making friends, rather he was interested only in winning and usually did so with the legs of a bull and a head to match! and as for the 1986 tour de france...oh greg would you stop whingeing!! lol

brilliant.

I am quite a fan of Felice Gimondi. I think the story of him only going to
his first Tour De France because his other team mates were injured or ill
then going on to win the thing is pretty inspiring. Kind of like the plot of
a (possibly rather cheesy) film. Seems like quite a sympathetic character too, from what I can tell.

There was a great - if very sad - documentary on TV here the other night
about Jean Pierre Monsere. Seems he would have been one of the greatest if it wasn't for his traguc death.

The Badger.

Love the shot of Hinault in the snow - team Renault/Gitane, race Paris - Nice by any chance?

My hero, today I'll go for Fignon - so young when he won his first TdF...and his palmares doesn't really do his ability justice.

Some good threads on this subject here though.

Roadking.
