right i thought i knew most stuff about bikes. just bought a new stem for the trials bike. nice onza one, big reach and rise as its a 20" mod bike. so stem turns up. try a 25.4mm bar. too small. right so ordered a lovely 31.8 megamo flattie. too big. wtf! what size is between 25.4 and 31.8 :?

It'll be 28.6mm.
Onza used 28.6mm as a trials standard before 31.8mm bars came along. Alpinestars also used the standard in the early nineties:

You can shim out a 1" bar, or look for a matching Onza bar.
