ive just got a pair of crossmax sl, i was asuming that i could use them with normal tyers and tubes but ive just had a quick google and there seems to be mixed opinions about this.
Q1 are normal tyers ok to use?
Q2 the valve of a normal tube wont fit through the rim, would it be really stupid to ream the hole a little to take the larger valve.
Q3 should i wait and get the rest of the kit to go tubeless.

a bit anoying as i was hopeing to get this bike back up and running without spending much more.

Just going down this road myself

I am going tubeless but non UST - a bit of reading on the Stans forum suggests this is ok, one of the examples used being a crossmax (tick) and kenda klimax's (tick) so I am hoping it will work well :D

I got Mavic UST valves (nicely made and look neat  might sound sad   but they have no visible thread, have nice collars that protect the rim with an o ring and come with a presta adaptor for initial bead seating / inflation), a bottle of Stans and the injection syringe - both cheap off the net, post free

Pics are in my build thread, can send you suppliers if you want ?

You can wait and see how I go on this weekend, I can see it getting messy and looking like a porn movie gone wrong ...

As far as I know you can use normal tyres with those wheels, I have used tyres & tubes with my Crossland's

Normal valve? do you mean schrader (car type)? or presta? or will both not fit?

You could ream the hole out, it will weaken the rim a tiny bit, being a lightweight rim you would have to be very careful to not compromise them (IMHO)

If you have a set of usable wheels I'd wait and then go full tubeless if you have any nagging doubts

i ment car type valve, if i went tubless id like the option of using tubes, though im not sure of the tubless system yet. guess theres only one way to find out.

wd pro are you putting these on your airborne? mine are for my black widow :D

edit: ive just caught up on your thread, very nice!

Yes :D just put them together with the blasted frame - look nice ... I can't say I've seen many Ti frames with all silver wheels (normally black) but it looks pretty cool :D

I wanted black to ! But having seen the silver with the frame, I think it turned out right ;-)

I think silver rims / spokes look better in later life to :D

Then just use Presta tubes - they'll fit.

I don’t think I would drill them out – even a little :-(

If I look at the inside of the rim, the middle channel is very narrow and only very slightly wider then the rim hole.

If the rim hole was enlarged I think it would permanently compromise the sealing area for the UST valve making it a one way modification …
