Manitou Suspension Conversion

I saw this on my local auction site...

I was wondering a) Is it possible to weld a rear triangle onto a Manitou frameset that had been designed for rear suspension without compromising it's integrity?

b) Should I risk buying it?

question is , WHY would he do it in the first place ????

and given their rep for breaking up ( cap`n )

bit unwise to be adding bits to where there shouldn`t be bits

if they crack where they were originally welded with new tubes , how will the tubes react to being welded at 12 years old

just a thought
