Reading up on the early days, there seems to be something missing from todays riding - a hyper-competitiveness in clothing, tech and bikes (although we all were guilty of looking at the rear mech first to see who had what).
The actual skill of being able to throw some very sketchy materials down a mountainside or across rough terrain has been lost in the shouting out of Strava times or the bleeping of Garmins.
