I own an older Bronco with the special "mixed" headset, bottom needle bearing and top ball bearing. The big white plastic top nut has tiny Allen screws to fix it on the steerer tube which are stuck and impossible to open.
I need to adjust the headset and have to remove those Allen screws. If I force the white nut with a spanner I'm afraid to damage the thread of the steerer tube and/or crack the plastic of the nut.
I think the best solution would be to (force) remove the nut and replace the top bearing with an Ahead Set type bearing and buy an Ahead Set type stem to keep everything in place.
I would be grateful if someone could help me with good advice. BTW what is the diameter of the steerer tube? 1 inch or 1 1/8?
Thanks a lot for any helpful comments.
I'm in the Philippines now so no access to good special tools. I have a nice big adjustable spanner and a good set of Allen keys.
