Just heard on the news there was an earthquake off the Solomon Islands.
We are now under a tsunami alert! It is meant to hit here in 30 mins.
Reports are that some of the smaller isalnd have been hit hard, I just hope the Barrier Reef takes some of the power out of it before it gets here (better still it doesn't get here).

My GF has just driven down to the shops, and now all the phones have gone down, so have to wait for her to get back.
Just hope we are all over re-acting.

Yep saw that before I walked to work. From a purely scientific point of view I'm interested to see if we see any noticable changes being so far from the siurce and with a some land mass likely to deflect it.

Well it looks like it's over - and nothing happened (thankfully).
It was an over reaction, but after the 2004 tsunami, I don't think any low laying coastal cities can take that risk.

We were going to 'head for the hills', but there was total gridlock on the roads, so we stayed here, and reports started coming through that the threat had eased.

Maybe I should get one of those Klein Mantra's, at least I can use it as a floatation device during the next tsunami/ cyclone/ flood :?

At least six people have been killed and several are missing as "10-metre-high waves continue to crash [on] coastal villages" in the Solomon Islands after a major earthquake and tsunami today.

Villages have been destroyed and homes, ripped from the land, are reportedly floating out to sea...
