i know theres a difference dependent on chainring/derallieur size, but which gives the best most usable options

CRC have the PG 970 reduced to 23 quid.I need one and a chain for my new X.9 set up to be able to make the Dunkeld meet on the 30th

11-32 is a bit lighter

11-34 gives a slightly different set of ratios

Both have the same amount of usability, as with any 9spd cassette there are ratios which you cannot use (big-big etc...) & some ratios are duplicated in other gears.

Assuming your front rings are 22/32/44, and your wheels are 26", you get a bottom gear of 16.8 or 17.8 inches with 34t and 32t respectively.

Depends how hilly it is, I s'pose.

What about the 950,that any good?.
Is it just minor differences and really down to weight or is it something more :?
Are the carriers different?

only the 980/990 have alloy carriers

weight is the main difference

950 weighs about 450g (11-34)
970 weighs about 400g (11-34)
980 weighs about 310g "" ""
990 weighs about 300g "" ""

if you're a weight weenie Shimano are lighter par for par

Deore about 400g (11-34), Sram 950 equivalent
SLX is about 315g, Sram 970 equivalent
XT is about 300g (11-34), Sram 980 equivalent
XTR is about 245g, Sram 990 equivalent

If you're using a Hope ProII hub you need to use an alloy carrier on the cassette (980 or XT and above)
