Is this how bikes were locked in the 60's ?

:D

They were the days, even though i'm not old enough to remember. I have seen many bikes from that era with a spoke lock, basically a bar that went across the spokes.

Theory of both being you cannot ride it away in a hurry

posties bikes still have spoke locks...(not that they use them...not opening that can of worms up again)

You make it sound like I couldn't open your capper with one of my discarded escort or tina keys

Back then there weren't any teams of robbers going around in vans stealing bikes , they were doing banks

If it couldn't be ridden away it wasn't going far .

The Raleigh Superbe has a nice lock on the fork that stops the bike from steering and I've seen many eastern bikes with a lock on the seatstays that stops the rear wheel rotating .

True, but that's probably because the locks are 30 years old.

Then again i remember when i had a MK2 Escort back in 92 a mate used to "steal" it using the keys for his Hillman Avenger

Wonderful picture, not only is the chain and lock pathetic, the bikes not even attached to anything

How things have changed

When I went touring in Holland circa 1997 I passed a cycle shop in Amsterdam that in the typical direct Dutch way of speaking had a sign in the window pointing at a cable lock saying 'Shit Lock, you dont want one of those you want one of these !' with another arrow indicating a very heavey duty cable lock. At the time it was possible to watch bike theives openly nicking bikes in broad daylight as you sat in a pavement cafe. No point hiring a bike at the time, cheaper to buy the stolen bike off the theif (I in no way condone this behaviour you understand)

I used to "lock" and "unlock" my Austin A40 with a swiss army knife (the small blade)

My old Triumph Dolomite could be opened by anything that would fit in the lock. I once used a ring pull.

A different world.

Talking of cars I used to be able to get in my mate's Dad's Cortina with a lollipop stick.
