ok my mate wants to get into a bit of mountain biking. new is his way, he has about 300 quid. what are the best shouts? he's not the biggest guy in the world (5ft 6 and lightly built)

i'd be searching for shops selling off their 09 range. je james and pauls cycles usually do pretty good discounts i have found

really want to make an LBS job of this. he hasnt been near a bike in years so getting a fit is gonna be important.

Secondhand is the way to go at that price. He'll get something really nice for less than £300.

he wont do that

smack him round the back of his head and tell him its more environmentally friendly to buy second hand.

Best way then would be to actually visit some bike shops and see whats on offer :?
Try some out and take note of the best sizes for him.

With or without stabilizers ? ;)

Some bike shops sell off their trade ins - but a visit to see what he likes and get sized up is a good idea anyway.

He is mad not going second hand. He could get a lovely bike on here for £300. If not then i agree that Decathlon are the way to go. Their bikes are loss leaders and are much better than people realise. If you dont know them they are like a French Halfords/Millets type place that cover all aspects of outdoor action and more and are huge in Europe, just not so well known in the UK. Their bikes are far east made but to a high standard and often come with far better kit than anything even a couple of hundred pounds more. Check the link for a couple of models at the bottom.

If not then entry level treks, Specialized are ok. Maybe an ex-demo Specialized Hardrock might just be inside his budget????
