lots of bmx frames came in clear at the end of the 90s . looked ok until it scratched then you could see the rust forming under the rest of the clear so it looked tatty
i have a bare metal bmx frame that hasnt seen paint for a few years and is doing fine , once in a while i give it a quik rub over with gt85 and a scotchbrite pad . it doesnt ever get muddy though and sweat makes it rust quicker than the rain
if you do just use clear use twice as much of it to account for the lack of paint thickness
whenever i tried thin coats of clear it started to look cloudy
next one ill be painting will be satin black so i get to avoid clear
my trailstar is dulux brush , harder wearing than i thought it would be and if i do scratch it i just slap some more on
