Machining Ti advice

Dirt Disciple
Just bought Ti stem bolt and i think it needs a bit of modding to fit, which is no probs but just after turning advice.

Can I use HSS cutting tools and dies?? or do I need somthing harder?? speeds or tips would be usefull.

Cheers.

Hard.

I tried drilling 5mm ti sheet once. Only a 6mm hole, so i drilled a 3mm pilot hole which took 3 hss bits, then a further 2 bits to open it out to 6mm.
It depends a lot what grade it is. Would it not be cheaper/simpler to buy the right bolt?

Not really, I have some carbide tooling steel, and quite like a bit of a challenge.

Just after some engineering advice.

Ah its ok, just had a lightbulb light above my head moment, problem solved. Cheers anyway!!

Trust you're sorted with feeds and speeds. . .
But just for info, Ti has a crazy low thermal conductivity, so heat doesn't bleed out into the job very well. Use LOADS of coolant, or run an airlineto the cutting tip, else the tip and flutes burn out vary quick. For turning, carbide helps 500%
