ebay - what would you do

Say you sold some 30yr old forks on ebay, stated that the stanchions were pitted, you had no idea what the internals were like, and that rebuild kits used to be available when you were younger.

The buyer left very positive feedback. Now 5 days later is demanding a refund as he has pulled them to bits only to find rebuild kits arent available from the manufacturer anymore. And that the stanchions are worn.

They were motocross forks not bike fork but same idea.

Due to his attitude in his emails I am inclined not to offer him a refund, as I see them fit for the use intended, to rebuild. There was never any indication in the listing that they were in any kind of working order, and I would think that the fact I listed the stanchions to be pitted would give you enough indication of that fact.

Sold as described I would say...pitted stanchions are always a sign of possible failure elsewhere...seals etc.
Would need to see your ad to be fuly confident with my answer, but it seems you were fair.

PS Paypal always seem to fall on the buyers side if an dispute proceeds..but they can only take funds from your paypal account ;)

Sounds like your description was fair. I'd let Paypal deal with it, they'll take into account your arguement. Just out of interest how much did they sell for?

Tricky one..

In fairness, you didn't say that the forks were perfect and that the spares were available.. On the other hand though would the forks have sold if you had included in the listing a mention of the forks needing servicing and spares that were probably obsolete?

IMHO I think a full refund demand is a bit much from the seller. But maybe you've shot yourself in the foot with not describing them fully. I always go a bit OTT with descriptions when selling on Ebay myself due to the amount of anal folk lurking who tend to want everything for nothing then complain if something isn't to their liking ;)

As with the others, let the paypal sort it

tell him to fook right off

ebay is full of morons now , he will expect you to refurbish and fit them next

fook sake your buying something from another part of the country based on a bit of text and a picture :x im surprised he hasnt moaned that they arnt factory fresh in original packing

i sold my mk1 escort a few years ago less engine and box , i had a couple people message me asking if it was drivable

im sure the fella had ample time to message you to request any picture from any angle but i bet he didnt . you provided no less information about them than a real auction/auto jumble/show/etc

im sure he didnt request a picture of the internals just assumed they would be usable as soon as they arrived

boo hoo serves him right for not asking for more specific info/pictures or doing a shred of reseach regarding spares

I had another email from him all in capitals demanding a refund again. his problem is that marzocchi do not support these dampers anymore.

What I find amazing is he left me glowing feedback, then decided to dismantle them, only to find the rebuild kits for a 30yr old product are not available anymore!

From what I have heard if you have money in your paypal account get it out ... I think they freeze or even take money out if people complain ??

What I dont understand is what are they actually complaining about? If you stated "like new" "just serviced" etc you can understand it but like you say no questions asked? So what would they actually be complaining to ebay about if you dont refund?

If you decide to email him back do it all lower case in a really small font, just for a laugh.

On a serious note I would empty your paypal account. They aren't regulated by the Financial Services Authority so that they can behave as they wish with absolute impunity, take your money and run like the wind!

Stand your ground, you are right. If someone wants to buy 30 year old dampers which are described as "pitted" and so forth, without checking if parts were available that is their problem.

JUST ANOTHER EBAY IDIOT WITH A BROKEN KEYBOARD.
