I ered on the side of caution and called in a plumber...one recommended to me by a friend.
Fitted new thermocouple, cleaned the pilot, checked the system etc...now up and running.....ohhh....warm radiators....BLISS
And the bill?

£45  A plumber with a conscience ... opening admitted that he could charge more, but was happy to make enough money and not 'take the p+ss' Amazing. :D

You'll also keep his phone number and call him again.

With the current state of things, that's a shrewd investment in loyalty. :D
