Ugly ugly Kona

Shiver me timbers :shock: Have to agree on that one. Only thing more disturbing than those stays might be the graphics on the ´09 bikes. If you haven't seen them, don't look! :D
 
I agree - it's not exactly a thing of beauty nor do the welds look very attractive but that chainstay construction does I suppose give plenty of mud/tyre clearance and allow the chainstays to be as short as possible ,which is always difficult to do on a 29er (especially if you want to run fairly big tyres like 2.35").

Plus, that steel plate arrangment will be stronger than relying on overly crimped and manipulated tube to achieve the same end result. Probably doesn't look so bad built up and in the flesh. It's just an example of form following function.
