I have always fancied a carbon fibre bike, but never been able to afford one.

But what do you guys think about getting an old steel or aluminium frame and cutting the seat tube, top tube and down tube out, and replacing with standard carbon fibre tubing that is simply glued into the joints of the "donor" metal frame.

Is this a viable idea for a bit of fun or a waiste of time effort and money?

Ermm. :?
My thought are....

Apart from probably being dangerous (if it works at all).
It's a waste of time (and a frame) and money.

Sounds like an excellent project. Tinkering about with stuff is what makes us Brits great at inventing! But we are poo at seing it through to finished products

EDIT to market and sell i mean

And then find the steepest, gnarliest and rockiest piece of downhill to give it a thorough test.

Why not just cut all of the 'joints' out of an old frame to make a set of lugs that you can then use to hold together a full carbon tubeset? Way cooler.
