Bought a new PC yesterday and sold my laptop to get picked up tonight.

Only thing to replace all the files etc but had no replacable harddisk.

Asked a friend and he had on with some gigabite spare (200 with 150 filled).
Plugged the disk in the PC, started copying, did well and all of a sudden......

It just stopped, error, doesnt reconize the USB device anymore......

Oeps, hopefully the disk can be recovered but think I have to have a very good expanation...

Try the device in another computer or laptop first of all.

is it a self assembled thing or branded one

is there enough power getting to it does it have power suply with it

if all above has been covered and it isnt a physical problem you need to look for a data recovery program easy recovery by ontrack a good and easy to use

also try a disk repair but above all dont do it if you cant figure it out and find someone who can as you could cause more damage messing around

Before recovering, take the case of the portable drive and plug it into the PC.

If it's 3.5" it should be easy, if its the 2.5" (aka laptop and small) then you may need an adaptor if it's quite old.

Well, good luck and I didnt have to worry.

I told the owner it has crashed and he told me that it was the 2nd time this happened. So all his dat a was gone but he didnt blame me :)

Btw I didnt know you could dissamble the portable disk and put it in the PC, I did that before with a normale harddisk and indeed that recovered.

Thanks all for the help anyway.

Cheers,
Martin

Yes the portables are just normal drives in a case with a SATA or PATA to USB (or alternate) interface in them.

You can buy the cases separately or just put a new drive in it.
