I knew Stephen Hawing. One of my best friends at college, with whom I walked the Pennine Way, and was in a rowing crew for 2 years, is his eldest son. I used to go round to their house fairly regularly for Sunday lunch. Stephen was one of the smartest, funniest, most generous, and (yes) stubborn men I've ever known.

Stephen Hawking was a magnificent example of how much those with disabilities can contribute to the world. As the father of a disabled daughter, I really appreciated that. I hope many, many others do too and that he changed perceptions about this world as well our understanding of the wider universe.
