Gpx files and smartphones

GPS comes from space, so as long as whatever app you use only relies on the gpx file and GPS (doesn't require data) you'll be fine.

Though FWIW I tried to use my phone as a GPS, unless you've got power I.e. in a car, its crap.
Eats battery, poor location and generally not nice. A cheap (sub 100 quid) GPS device will probably do it far better.

I use an iPhone 5 which I bought specifically for GPS (mainly to avoid having to carry both a phone and GPS). A battery pack is pretty much essential - I bought a Belkin battery case which lasts 8-12 hours. When touring I charge it off the hub dyno.
With no signal you need to upload mapping data into the phone beforehand - OSM maps for UK roads are around 5GB. I use Scout GPS app and the whole of Western Europe is in the app cost, I upload the countries I need when touring.
Ordnance Survey is doing a years unlimited map subscription for £20 at present, which is good value.
